    Overview

The Australia red meat industry is strongly committed to animal welfare practices and how livestock are cared for. Together the red meat industry, has implemented a range of programs and initiatives to address animal welfare concerns. One such program titled "The Australian Livestock Processing Industry Animal Welfare CertificationSystem (AAWCS); is the processing industry's latest initiative in driving best practice animal welfare outcomes for meat processors. AAWCS is an independently audited certification program used to demonstrate compliance with the industry best practice animal welfare standards titled the 'Industry Animal Welfare Standards for Livestock Processing Establishments Preparing Meat for Human Consumption' (the Standards).

The program is an initiative of the Australian Meat Industry Council, with support from the Australian Meat Processor Corporation, Meat & Livestock Australia and is administered by AUS-MEAT on their behalf. Auditors who can conduct AAWCS audits do not have to be employed by AUSMEAT; however they must meet set competency criteria and have been approved by AUS-MEAT which ensures there is a consistent standard of auditing of the AAWCS requirements across establishments thus protecting the integrity of the program and participants from potential inconsistencies.

    Competency Requirements

To meet the competency requirements AUS-MEAT Limited along with MINTRAC has developed an interactive two (2) day training course designed to provide knowledge and skills for prospective regulatory, certification body or company trained auditors intending to conduct both an internal or an external third party animal welfare audit of a meat processing establishment. The course covers the major commercially farmed species in Australia and all the intended knowledge of the specific requirements of the Industry program.
